The Multi-sectoral Group Plants Bamboo along the Tumaga River

With the theme “Bamboos for a Cleaner and Greener Environment”, the Multi-sectoral Group (MSG) of the Tumaga River WQMA Governing Board gathered on March 26, 2018 for a bamboo planting activity along the Tumaga River at Barangay Mampang. The selected area for planting was at the downstream section of the River near the fishpond areas of the said barangay. Bamboos can help in reinforcing the river embankment, act as carbon dioxide sink, provide shade to the river, as well as provide livelihood opportunities on bamboo-related enterprises to the various stakeholders of the river. The activity is also part of the implementation of the 10-year Action Plan of the Tumaga River WQMA.

The kickoff program was held at the Mampang Barangay Hall and commenced with an invocation that was led by Kagawad Tomas San Antonio of Barangay Mampang. This was followed by a welcome message by Mr. Jason San Antonio, Barangay Administrative Officer. He informed the participants about the greening activities that were already conducted in Barangay Mampang that include tree planting and rehabilitation of almost 30 hectares of mangrove areas. He mentioned that Barangay Mampang is one with the Board in the protection of the environment.

The participants then proceeded to the site, bringing with them around 70 cuttings of bamboo plants. The bamboo cuttings were provided by the Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD) through the efforts of Mr. Dennis Jalon Francisco. The MSG members from Barangay Mampang, Barangay Guiwan, Barangay Tumaga, Barangay Boalan, Barangay Zambowood, ZCWD, Tugbungan Fishpond Operators, and City FARMC led the participants in the bamboo planting activity.

Also present were operators and workers of fishponds in the area as well as from a local farmer’s association. The participation of said stakeholders were facilitated by Mr. Roger Castro, City FARMC representative.
